It has become a space where community bonds are strengthened. Nicoline reminisces about how locals eagerly anticipate the reopening every year. "It's amazing to see kids who came years ago now returning as parents themselves," she shares.Operating from 3 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and opening early at 10 AM on weekends and public holidays, Playland is designed to fit into any schedule. I have a law qualification from NMU. However, while I tried to embrace law, my heart has always belonged to poetry, the arts, and the wonders of God’s creation."Reflecting on life before blindness, what are some vivid memories of places in Gqeberha you loved? "The sighted Lelethu was a free spirit. I loved walking around Central and exploring parks, enjoying reggae music as I drove alone. One cherished spot is Fort Frederick. While its backstory about targeting Mfengu people saddens me, the city views it offers remain a beautiful memory. Another favourite was walking from Bluewater Bay to the beach - a space for prayer and connecting with God."Take us back to the day you realized you were blind. What emotions did you experience? "Initially, I believed my blindness was temporary. I even anticipated the miracle that would restore my sight. Over time, I accepted this was my path. A pivotal moment was waking my father one night to pray with me. His tears and our shared plea to the ancestors remain a profound memory. Blindness reshaped my mind, sharpening my determination and allowing me to embrace life fully, despite its challenges."How has blindness changed your life? Was it easy to adapt? "Adaptation is a daily exercise. In the beginning, I stayed alone in my flat to figure things out - cooking, cleaning, organizing. Blindness has made me calmer, more zen. I’ve grown more honest, kinder, and less reactive. People’s actions are about themselves, not me, and I’ve learned not to take things personally."You seem to have a strong support system. Who are the key people in your life? "My family is my foundation. My late parents, my older brother, and my younger sister have been unwavering pillars of support. Together, we form a ‘power of three.’ My friends and colleagues also play crucial roles, amplifying my visions and ensuring my projects reach their fullest potential. Their love and dedication remind me that we are nothing without each other."What inspired you to advocate for women in the arts? "Advocacy has always been in me. As a child, I couldn’t tolerate injustice. My father’s documentaries about our struggles as Black people deeply influenced me. Today, I stand as a voice for women because I know what exclusion feels like. Advocacy is not a choice for me - it’s who I am."How has technology supported you in navigating life as a blind person? "Technology has been a lifesaver. Tools like voiceover on phones, JAWS for PCs, and apps for groceries allow me to maintain independence. With technology, I can live peacefully and productively. My dream now is a self-driving car!"What message would you share with the youth of Gqeberha? "I would remind them of the power of love and laughter. Even in the darkest moments, there is always light - though I may not see it, I feel it. I’ll share the stage with learners from Khanyisa School for the Blind and Yonela Mnana in a celebration of song and poetry. The funds raised will support a movie club for Khanyisa learners.Sadly, our communities still lack inclusivity. From inaccessible buildings to outdated systems, there’s much to improve. This segment is all about highlighting journeys that inspire us to keep going no matter what life throws our way.In this December edition, we shine the spotlight on the extraordinary story of Tshepiso Nompumelelo Maseti who has faced life’s toughest battles with unmatched courage. Diagnosed with multiple severe illnesses in her early 20s, she has not only fought for her health but also pursued her dreams with a determination that will leave you in awe. Her name is not just a name; it’s a symbol of hope and perseverance.Here’s her journey, in her own words: "If someone had told me that I'd be a regular patient at the hospital in my early 20s, I wouldn't have believed them. At just 24 years old, I have already been diagnosed with a lung infection, heart failure, depression, and a spinal infection.Since 2021, my life has not been the same. In May 2021, I was diagnosed with a lung infection while completing my final year at university. I was so sick that everyone around me tried to convince me to give up on school and focus on my health. But because I believe in God's work, I refused to give up. I wrote all my tests and assignments from my hospital bed. By God’s grace, I passed with distinctions and graduated.Ever since then, I’ve been constantly unwell. Yet, for every hospital visit, something in me felt compelled to either upgrade my studies or learn something new. Fast forward to March 2023: I graduated with my postgraduate qualification. I was so excited because things were finally looking up. I then decided to apply for an online short course that would take six months to complete, with an expected finish date of November 2023.As the days got closer to my finishing date, I was admitted to the hospital once again, and to my surprise, I was diagnosed with heart failure. I was so confused, upset, and angry at God because I couldn’t understand, “Why me?” Two days after being admitted, I had to write my last paper, and once again, I did it from my hospital bed.One thing about me - I refuse to give up! Two weeks after being hospitalized, I received an email confirming that I had passed all my modules and earned my certificate. I was so excited: a girl like me, fighting for her life while upgrading her education! Like they always say, for every dark season, there will be light at the end of the tunnel.In January 2024, I vowed that this year I needed to get a job. Little did I know, God had different plans for me. In March 2024, after signing a work contract, I got terribly sick and had to resign. I was accepted and proceeded with my studies. By July 2024, I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I know, right? My story is one of a kind.I was so ready to give up on everything, including my dream of wearing that big, red graduation gown for my PhD. But while in the hospital again, I found myself motivated to push through my short course. Something happens to me every time I’m in the hospital—a burning desire to do more and more ignites within me.In October 2024, I was awarded my certificate for the online course.As of now, I hold the following qualifications under my name:National Diploma in Ecotourism Management Postgraduate in Ecotourism Management Certificate in Social Media Marketing Certificate in Data Science and Analytics Certificate in Digital Business Skills Certificate in Trauma Management I am currently pursuing my TEFL qualification.My story is long, and I wish I could share even more, but I hope what I’ve shared will motivate someone out there to keep going no matter how dark life may seem. God’s plans for your life are valid. Trust yourself and believe that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.As I write this, I am scheduled for another hospital admission for my spinal infection. Recently, I was also accepted to study coding and programming engineering, starting in January 2025.Being so sick at such a young age has been an eye-opener for me. My faith has been tested the most, but I have never given up, nor have I lost my confidence. Everything I set out to do, I did. Regardless of how much my health has challenged me, I know that one day I’ll stand tall and be proud of how far I’ve come".Her story reminds us of all that the human spirit is truly indomitable. Even in the face of debilitating illnesses, she has continued to defy the odds, accomplishing milestones that many of us could only dream of under far fewer challenging circumstances.As we close off this year with her incredible journey, let her life serve as a beacon of hope. Challenges may come, but with faith, resilience, and an unshakable belief in yourself, MABAYAZI reminds us that the light at the end of the tunnel is always within reach.

After months of fierce competition, the 2024 Local Fashion Police campaign culminated in an extraordinary finale that celebrated South Africa’s brightest fashion talents. Held at The Station Newtown on Thursday, 28 November, the grand event highlighted the creativity, passion, and innovation of local designers and their supporters, all united in showcasing the brilliance of South African-made fashion.This year’s campaign, was the most electrifying yet, proving the power of local talent while encouraging consumers to prioritise South African-made fashion to drive economic growth. From hundreds of entries nationwide, four exceptional winners emerged, all embodying the campaign’s commitment to local pride and excellence.The star-studded evening featured dazzling bespoke designs by judges and renowned designers Orapeleng Modutle, Jessica Jane Molebatsi, Mzukisi Mbane, and Ole Ledimo. The winners proudly walked the runway in these stunning creations and were also awarded R40,000 worth of bespoke designs crafted exclusively for them by their respective judges. Among the attendees were South Africa's top fashion influencers and celebrities such as Sjava, Wanda Baloyi, and Sophie Ndaba.The event itself was a feast for the senses. Guests were treated to unforgettable entertainment, including electrifying performances by the iconic Boom Shaka and a surprise alumni fashion showcase. This special segment spotlighted past Local Fashion Police designers who have continued to make waves in the industry, with their latest creations showcased to thunderous applause. From the vibrant atmosphere during the Trellidor Local Fashion Police jail photobooth sessions to the grand finale’s closing walk, every detail of the evening reinforced the power of local unity and creativity. The Trellidor jail, designed specifically for the event, added a playful yet meaningful touch to the proceedings. Guests who dared to attend without wearing locally made outfits were “arrested” and subjected to do the Walk of Shame by the Local Fashion Police and taken to the mock jail, where they had the chance to make a public pledge to support local fashion in the future.The jail wasn’t just a space for pledges, it doubled as the evening’s photobooth, where attendees, both “arrested” and not, posed in their stylish outfits. This interactive attraction created excitement and brought the campaign’s message to life, blending entertainment with advocacy for local fashion. It served as a reminder of the importance of buying South African-made products while giving guests a fun, memorable experience that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the event.Proudly South African’s Chief Marketing Officer, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi, reflected on the campaign’s impact, "This year’s Local Fashion Police competition has been an incredible journey of discovery, creativity, and unity. Firstly, as the Business Leads writer, I must say it's always a pleasure to be the first one to be on the receiving end of stories as powerful and inspiring as Sandy's. So, allow me to re-introduce you to Sandy Zoetmulder, founder of ZBrands, who is the definition of a passionate entrepreneur. Born and raised in the vibrant city of Gqeberha - formerly known as Port Elizabeth - Sandy’s journey to building a successful branding company has been marked by perseverance, innovation, and a deep love for her community. As the oldest of three siblings, she describes her upbringing as a tight-knit family unit - a value she has carried into her professional life. Married to Michael, owner of Zsports Events, Sandy juggles her roles as a businesswoman and mother. Together, they have two stepchildren, Claudia (23) and Tristan (22), who are living their best lives in London, as well as their two younger children, Jayden (10) and Zoe (9).“I’ve spent most of my life in PE, except for two years in Dubai after school,” she says. Sandy's experience in Dubai played a pivotal role in shaping her business acumen, but her love for her hometown remained unwavering. Upon returning, she joined the opening team of News Café at The Boardwalk in 2002. Starting as a waitress, she quickly climbed the ranks to head waitress and then front-of-house manager. Eventually, when the opportunity arose, she and her father bought shares in the business, which soon became a family-owned venture.Reflecting on her time at News Café, Sandy notes, “It was during my years as the operational owner that I discovered my passion for branding.” She quickly became known for her expertise in marketing, advertising, and brand consistency - skills that helped her earn multiple national awards, including Brand Builder of the Year and Marketer of the Year. Additionally, Sandy was a Top 3 Finalist in the Entrepreneur Category for the BWA Business Woman of the Year in 2018 and was also named one of The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2015. By 2019, after 15 years in the restaurant industry, Sandy made the decision to sell News Café and pursue her newfound passion: branding. The pandemic forced her to adapt quickly, pivoting to producing branded face masks and sanitizers. Despite these early challenges, Sandy’s resilience paid off when, in August 2020, she expanded ZBrands by purchasing an existing branding company. This acquisition allowed her to bring branding operations in-house, ensuring higher-quality service and faster delivery times. “Hello to the world of in-house branding and literally GREAT service at my fingertips!” she exclaims.ZBrands has since grown into a thriving business with an all-woman team of 13 members, based out of their new branding studio at 174 Villiers Road, Walmer. The company prides itself on delivering exceptional service and can offer over 60,000 different branded products to clients. From eco-friendly apparel to promotional items like drinkware and banners, ZBrands has become a go-to supplier for businesses across South Africa. “We are proud to partner with leading national suppliers such as Barron, Amrod, and Headwear 24,” Sandy says.&nbsp;<h2>“Rome wasn’t built in a day!”</h2>Of course, success doesn’t come without its challenges. Like many small businesses, ZBrands has faced financial hurdles, especially with investments in equipment and the constant need for maintenance. Power outages due to load shedding have also been a significant issue. “Our machinery requires electricity, so we had no option but to invest in a rent-to-own solar system for our premises,” Sandy explains. From the very beginning, family, friends, and local businesses rallied behind her, offering both encouragement and opportunities.
