The festive fun returns to Gqeberha: Playland at Kings Beach.

Gqeberha’s festive season just wouldn’t feel complete without the vibrant return of Playland at Kings Beach, the cherished family amusement park that locals have come to adore. Opening its gates on 6 December 2024, Playland promises weeks of laughter, joy, and memories that will warm hearts long after the summer sunsets.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Nicoline Gericke, the passionate powerhouse behind Playland. Her excitement is contagious as she shares how this year’s instalment aims to outdo itself, making every moment unforgettable for visitors of all ages. "This year, we've improved our classic rides to ensure there's something for everyone to enjoy," she enthuses.

The whole scheduled dates for the gathering are always a spectacle. Colourful lights lit up the night sky, laughter and thrilled screams filled the air, and the smell of freshly popped popcorn danced with the ocean breeze. Families stroll together, while daring teenagers race to queue for the spinning rides that make their hearts race, and their friends cheer them on.

Playland is more than just amusement rides - though they’re the undeniable stars. It has become a space where community bonds are strengthened. Nicoline reminisces about how locals eagerly anticipate the reopening every year. "It's amazing to see kids who came years ago now returning as parents themselves," she shares.

Operating from 3 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and opening early at 10 AM on weekends and public holidays, Playland is designed to fit into any schedule. Keep in mind, though, that unpredictable weather might affect these times, and as a family-friendly venue, the event area is alcohol-free.

Reflecting on Playland’s history, Nicoline proudly recounted past seasons, like its successful run from December 2023, that brought immense joy to Gqeberha’s residents. "Last year, we saw record numbers of visitors, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We're looking forward to building on that success this year," she says.

This year’s event promises to carry on the tradition, with thrilling rides, carnival games, and food stalls catering to every craving.
