World-class elegance rooted in Gqeberha's natural beauty.
Sept Cover Feture: In 2005, Sarah and her husband Ralph embarked on a transformative journey that would change the landscape of Gqeberha’s event and wedding industry. Leaving behind the bustling corporate world of Johannesburg, they relocated to Nelson Mandela Bay, drawn by the region’s captivating coastal lifestyle and top-tier educational institutions for their young family. Their transition was not merely a change in scenery but a calculated move into a business venture that would come to define elegance and service excellence in the Eastern Cape.
The Plantation, nestled in the enchanting indigenous forest of Lovemore Park, emerged as the first all-in-one wedding venue in Gqeberha. "We built The Plantation in 2005 as Gqeberha’s first purpose-built wedding venue, complete with a chapel, reception venue, and accommodation," they recall. Their decision was driven by a meticulous market analysis, which revealed a significant gap for a world-class wedding venue in the region. From the moment The Plantation opened its doors, it has been a beacon of sophistication, attracting couples from across the country and earning a stellar reputation as one of South Africa’s top wedding destinations.
The couple’s vision for The Plantation was clear from the outset. They were not just creating a venue; they were crafting an experience, one that married the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape with unparalleled service. "We were looking for a lifestyle business, where we could live and run a business from the same property," they explain. The majestic setting of Lovemore Park, with its lush greenery and serene ambiance, offered the perfect backdrop for an elegant wedding experience that brides and grooms would cherish forever.
Their success at The Plantation led to the expansion of their business portfolio, resulting in the establishment of The Plantation Group, which now includes three distinct properties. In addition to The Plantation, which specializes in high-end weddings and events, they own The Boma, an outdoor venue with a South African theme ideal for informal, social gatherings, and 39 on Church, a 4-star guest house and conference centre in Walmer catering to business travellers. These ventures complement one another, creating a comprehensive event and accommodation offering that meets diverse market needs.

However, running a business in Gqeberha presents its own set of challenges and opportunities, especially when compared to the economic landscapes of Johannesburg or Cape Town. The local economy demands a relentless pursuit of business opportunities to maintain profitability. "The economy is a lot tougher in Gqeberha than in Johannesburg or Cape Town. It is vital to fight hard for a constant flow of business, and to keep that business profitable," they note. Despite these challenges, the couple sees opportunities in the region's unique characteristics, particularly in exceeding client expectations through exceptional service.
Their commitment to service excellence is evident in their hands-on approach to training and mentoring local youth in the hospitality industry. They have cultivated a network of suppliers who share their ethos, ensuring that every event at The Plantation, The Boma, and 39 on Church is executed with precision and care. Their dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed, with The Plantation consistently earning accolades and recognition at both national and international levels.
As Nelson Mandela Bay prepares for Tourism Month in September, The Plantation is poised to play a pivotal role in promoting the region's attractions. The couple is passionate about showcasing the Eastern Cape’s natural and cultural heritage to both local and international visitors. They are particularly excited about the recently launched Eastern Cape Heritage Food Tasting experience at The Boma, which has quickly become a favourite among corporate clients and tourists alike.
Looking ahead, the couple has ambitious plans to further elevate Gqeberha as a premier destination for weddings and events. They are working on establishing a wedding industry collective to jointly market Nelson Mandela Bay as a top-end destination wedding location. Additionally, they plan to take their Eastern Cape Heritage Food Tasting experience on a national tour, sharing the province’s rich stories and flavours with a broader audience.
Through their unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and community engagement, Sarah and her husband have not only built a successful business but have also become ambassadors for the Eastern Cape, promoting its beauty and potential on a national and international stage. The Plantation stands as a testament to their vision—a world-class venue rooted in the natural splendour of Gqeberha.
